CNA Certification in California: Exam Overview

NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program):

Complete a State-Approved CNA Training Program

  1. Eligibility: You must complete a CNA training program approved by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

    • The program includes a minimum of 160 hours, divided between classroom instruction and clinical practice.

  2. Locate a Program: Approved programs can be found at community colleges, vocational schools, or healthcare facilities.

    • Check the CDPH website for a list of approved training providers.

  3. Certification Requirements: Ensure that your program meets the CDPH requirements, including instruction on patient care, infection control, and communication skills.

Submit the Initial Application to CDPH

  1. Download the Application:

    • Go to the CDPH website and download the "Initial Application for Certified Nurse Assistant Examination" form (CDPH 283B).

  2. Complete the Form:

    • Provide personal details such as name, address, and Social Security number.

    • Include training program details and signatures from your program director.

  3. Background Check:

    • Complete a fingerprint-based background check using the Live Scan form (CDPH 283C).

    • Submit the Live Scan results to the CDPH.

  4. Pay the Fees:

    • Check the current fee structure for the application and Live Scan.

Register for the CNA Exam

  1. Choose a Testing Provider:

    • In California, Headmaster LLP administers the CNA exam.

    • Visit their website to register and schedule your exam.

  2. Prepare for the Exam:

    • The CNA exam consists of:

      • A written (or oral) component: Multiple-choice questions on theoretical knowledge.

      • A skills demonstration: Performing five randomly selected nursing assistant skills.

    • Study materials and practice tests are often available through your training program or the testing provider.

Take the CNA Exam

  1. Exam Day:

    • Bring a government-issued photo ID and any required documentation (e.g., CDPH approval letter).

    • Arrive early and dress appropriately (typically scrubs).

  2. Pass Both Components:

    • You must pass both the written/oral and skills sections to become certified.

    • If you fail one section, you can retake it within a specified period.

Receive Your Certification

  1. Results Notification:

    • After passing, your results will be submitted to the CDPH.

    • Certification processing can take a few weeks.

  2. Verify Your Status:

    • Check the status of your CNA certification on the California Nursing Assistant Registry.

  3. Renewal and Maintenance:

CNA certifications in California must be renewed every two years. Ensure you complete continuing education and work requirements to maintain your certification.
